La « bombe de fortune » est conçue avec des composants usuels, quotidiens, banals, facilement disponibles sur place, et d’aspect anodin. La preuve par l’âne, vue par les soldats britanniques dans le Helmand.
Le Major Richard Streatfeild, 3rd Battalion the Rifles Regiment - A Company, Sangin Valley :
« The insurgents have really outdone themselves by strapping an improvised explosive device to a donkey and sending it towards the camp. »
DROP THE DEAD DONKEY
Les alliés avaient été alertés par la rumeur d’une nouvelle technique, rapportée par les soldats afghans: l’utilisation d’un banal âne, mort, pour dissimuler une bombe. « Drop the Dead Donkey » (Lâchez l’âne mort). Sauf que dans ce cas précis, la variante était l’utilisation d’un âne bien vivant, lâché vers le camp militaire. Récit :
« Fortunately the gate guard noticed something suspicious when a group of men let the donkey go a short way from the camp and then hurried off
He tried to divert the animal but it eventually had to be stopped with a rifle shot. A team went out and realised there was something supicious under the hay. One brave soldier set it on fire to the hay with a flare and there was a considerable explosion.
No-one was hurt thanks to the swift action taken and they were saved from a very unusual attack. »
DES PRÉCÉDENTS
Defence of the Realm trace un rapide historique des précédents IED utilisant des animaux, depuis le cheval colombien (2003) et les chiens irakiens (2005), et remonte aux expériences militaires américaines de la deuxième guerre mondiale avec cette excellente anecdote des chauves-souris « japonaises ».
Le Times avait déjà signalé l’utilisation des ânes, élément banal et quotidien du paysage afghan, comme cache lors de cette explosion d’avril dernier.
HUMOUR BRITANNIQUE
La conclusion revient au Major Streatfeild, qui explique la difficulté à rendre compte officiellement :
« It is impossible to report a donkey IED up the chain of command without either a wry smile at the ridiculousness or a feeling that the world is slightly off its axis. »
